Back to main On the Defender vehicles, Land Rover do put a protective wax type coating on underneath. The box sections and cavities are not injected with any kind of rust protection however. From my experience of cleaning and rustproofing many Land Rover vehicles I would say that Land Rover's underbody coating lasts about 4 years if you do not use the vehicle off road. At the end of this time you will see quite a lot of rust - particularly on the cast iron components of the chassis, axles etc. If you do use the vehicle off road extensively the coating will be worn off by the abrasive effect of mud very quickly. Mud and road dirt also stick to this "sticky goo" type coating.
New Discoverys are not given any protection. (Although I believe this can be specified as an optional extra)
In the US where Land Rover 90s have not been available since 1998 because of the stringent vehicle safety laws, some '98 models are now fetching more than they did brand new ( - but only the very best examples of course). If Land Rover decide that the next 90 is to have a unitary body like the new Range Rover, then the present 90's will become instant classics because some "die-hards" will always want the chassis.
If such a scenario becomes reality, only the best TD5's will be sought after though. When a vehicle acquires classic status, the very best models are generally worth about three times more than the average models. The very best models will be the ones which have had a KLEENtect treatment from "Before `n' After" because the chassis will be in perfect condition even if the vehicle has seen hard, off-road use. So if you have a new or nearly new TD5 you should book in straight away for the KLEENtect treatment and protect your Land Rover's future value.
